[From here.]

The door from Milliways opens into the garage, and Rosalie looks to Emmett as they come through the door. She lets out a sigh of relief when she sees him in his normal clothes again.

"Thank god," she says, lightly.

Isn't it strange…

Isn't it strange, how a phone call can change everything?

Strange, or funny? Sad.

The tables turned, then overturned…

And suddenly everything is

upside-down.

It wasn't that way before. She thought it had been, she thought she was making things right.

With a phone call.

But it was only tilted.
It was only

off-center.

Now they're all hanging head-first, trying to hold on while it seems like the world is trying to shake them from itself.

With another phone call. Isn't that funny?

And she is helpless, unable to reach, while one of them loses his grip.

It was her fault. Isn't it sad.

She can't possibly imagine…

…it's impossible…

A world without Emmett.

No.

A world without Edward.

A blurry splotch of gold in the glass she doesn't even recognize. A tree shaking in the forest. A scream for help.

"Emmett!"

"Emmett, help…"

There are no other words.

A question, but no answer. (There are no other words.) A strong embrace, to hold her…

…to keep her from falling…

…upside-down.

(While one of them loses his grip, out of reach.)

A phone call.

He might never come home, and it's all her fault. She can't possibly imagine… wasn't she thinking that just now?

(That she missed his cutting remarks. The black wit which was more in line with her dark sense of humor than Emmett's sunny, joking nature. The music, the stereo and the piano. And his voice, his humming as they worked together in the garage, not arguing but not conversing either… just… being together. Just… being…)

He is too rash.

Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be.

"You think he's going to pull a Romeo?"

With one phone call.

The tables have turned. Isn't it strange?

Rosalie is sitting on the edge of her bed, staring at her cell phone.

It reads, "Compose Message" at the top, but the message itself is blank.

She's probably typed and deleted about thirty messages by this point. She doesn't know what she wants to say, but she has to say something.

It's frustrating to her, that she can't keep her mind off of it, that she can't keep her mind off of him. But it's not her fault-- she's reminded of it no matter where she is in the house, no matter who she's talking to. No one seems to be able to let it go. And of course that makes it impossible for her to let it go, to.

(She refuses to believe that she wouldn't be able to otherwise. She'd rather focus on the fact that his absence is making everyone else miserable, and pretend that she couldn't care less.)

It doesn't help, either, that Alice and Jasper are gone. She wants them home, too, but she's not angry with them. Not yet, anyway. Still, their absence makes it that much harder to forget.

Eventually, she types three words:

Come home already.

It's harsh, she knows, and not any more likely to receive a response than any of the other messages she's sent him. But it's how she feels, and she doesn't really care what he thinks.

But she hesitates a moment before hitting the "Send" button...
